I'm not always as green as I'd like to be, but I'm certainly much more aware of Mother Nature's needs than I used to be. For years, I like most consumed without ever thinking of the damage my actions may have caused. I drove a gas guzzling Land Rover, sometimes to just make a quick 2 block drive to Blockbuster. Now, I do also believe we are products of our environment as well. Living in L.A, a person can get caught up in the hype of daily glamour living. Consume or be consumed.
That all changed when I met Noah. I met Noah on the filthy streets of downtown L.A while researching a writing assignment. He was a homeless veteran, a lost soul, or to be more accurate a disgaurded soul our society had no longer any use for. Noah spent his days collecting cans to turn in for cash which in turn I found out later he was using to found a trip. More of one last adventure. You see, Noah was dying from lung cancer, years of breathing in traffic exhaust, is the price of living on the streets. He decided to fix up an old discarded sailboat and sail it to Costa Rica to die.
The months passed and I began to really get to know this great man, then one day, he was gone. I dreamed he sailed off in the sunset. It was a little dream for a great man who's life truly began towards the end.
Noah's story inspired me to be better and I decided to make a film about Noah. I took it a step further by funding the film "Noah's Ark" entirely with proceeds from recycling bottles and cans. I wanted to make this film project something special that the audience could participate in so we hit the streets just like Noah gathering the cans from ordinary people who were able to help by giving us their recyclables. Schools, businesses and celebrities, all lent a hand and we raised nearly $40,000 to date. The nickels add up. More importantly, the project gave me a new sense of worth and every morning I took my bottled to the recycling center I felt I was contributing to the benefit of humanity rather than consuming.
