  • Invested around $5 million of his inheritance in a growing chain of luxury ecotourism resorts in four African nations. He hopes to turn the hotels into an economic model for
    turning wildlife poachers into legitimate entrepreneurs.
  • Invested roughly a third of the $26 million that launched Conservation Corp. International in 1990, placing them among the largest investors in the Johannesburg, South Africa-based company. Conservation Corp. is a chain of African hotels that provides conservation aimed eco-safaris.
     
  • Established the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Prize, an
    annual $75,000 grant that is still awarded. Noted recipients have included
    chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall, who named one of her prized chimps
    "Getty."
