  • Our contribution to reducing local air pollution starts with reducing the emissions from our facilities that contribute to smog and acid rain - nitrous oxide (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • We are phasing out ozone-depleting substances in our operations.
  • We are managing the volume of oil in effluent discharged from our facilities.
  • Compared to agriculture and many other industries, our industry is not a major water consumer. However, we continue to look for new ways to reduce and re-use water, especially in areas where water is a limited and valuable resource.
  • We continue to score highest in our industry for 'environmental responsibility' in the Reputation Tracker survey conducted on our behalf in 13 of our major markets, by the polling agency Ipsos MORI.
  • Shell measures, reports and manages the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) from facilities around the world where we have a controlling interest. Our long-term target is that by 2010 our GHG emissions from these facilities will be 5% or more below 1990 levels. We aim to do this despite growing our business.
  • Friends of the Earth alleged that the damage caused by Shell's oil activities to local communities and the wider environment could be assessed at $20 billion.

Shell has been criticised in respect of a number of its operations. These have included its businesses in South Africa and Nigeria, notably in relation to protests of the Ogoni and Nigeria's execution of journalist Ken Saro-Wiwa, who spoke out against what he viewed as Shell's destruction of his tribe's homeland.“Our job is to respond in a positive way to a regulatory environment that has to be determined by government ... given the urgency, we have to start now.„

Lord Oxburgh, Shell Chairman
